Aiming Higher

unlock the potential of your staff

Aiming Higher is a three-tier management development programme designed to support public sector statutory duties to promote equality in the areas of race and gender. The three programmes are accredited by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) and are geared to meet the needs of staff at different stages in their management careers:

  • Level I Stepping Up Your Career is an entry level programme for staff considering management roles or for supervisors considering promotion
  • Level II Essentials of Management is for staff new to management or managers that need to re-fresh or re-focus their practice
  • Level III Enhancing Your Skills is designed to build upon existing practice with advanced management techniques for established managers and also those new to management

Aiming Higher enables new, aspiring or existing managers to explore management opportunities and help them overcome some of the barriers preventing them from developing their management careers. Aiming Higher aims to build the confidence of self-motivated staff who may already have some management responsibility and encourage others to consider routes to those roles where they may be under-represented, particularly BME, women and those with disabilities. Since its launch last summer YFA has delivered Aiming Higher programmes for targeted staff groups in a number of London Boroughs.

The London Boroughs of Camden and Tower Hamlets have commissioned our level 1 and 2 programmes - tailored for groups of BME and women staff. Gillian Tilbrook, Head of Training, and Media Service, explained that Camden had an excellent record of recruiting staff, and that Aiming Higher formed part of a powerful development strategy to encourage BME staff to consider management roles as possible career routes.

Our experienced trainers use creative approaches to enable everyone to participate and learn. Understanding and valuing diversity, both within the participant group and in organisations, is central to our facilitation of programme content and individual learning. Our courses enable reflection on experience, the understanding and application of existing theory and the acquisition of practical strategies to enable personal and professional development.
